Myself Kamalamma from Kunjibettu, Karnataka.
What to tell you people! Today I am going to the market and all streets and shops are red in colour. Our vegetable shop is also looking like one gift shop. Balloons and ribbons and red hearts are hanging in between onions and bananas and other vegetables. And vegetable seller is wearing bright red lungi. I am asking him, oho what special today Anna, your birthday or what? And he is full shocked. He is saying, Ayyo Kamalamma, how you are forgetting today is festival of Vallen ….. Vallan….. Then I am saying oho it is festival of Vallinathan, Lord Muruga is it? His assistant is saying, what Madam, not Vallinathan, today is Valentine’s festival.
Tchah! Then what to do? Kamalamma has nothing to say. So I am simply buying 2 kg onions and some other vegetables and all the time balloons and thermocole hearts which are hanging next to Kerala bananas are bumping against my head.
What I am thinking is, it is better to love our all people in the country whole year instead of so much drama one day in the year but who will listen to this housewife’s gyaan? And some of our people are not knowing properly what is Diwali or Holi or how to celebrate Ugadi… but full encyclopedia is in their head on how to celebrate Valentine’s Day. For our Lord Udupi Krishna’s birthday we are beginning our preparations only 3 days before, but for this Feb 14th people are planning one month in advance it seems!
But if I am to keep hand on Bhagwad Gita and tell whole truth, I will say here that I am also making preparations for this day much in advance – I am seeing my neighbor making big eyes at the red roses in my flower pot and I am hiding all rose plants inside the house one week before.
Now you people will say Kamalamma is jealous because the Mister is not celebrating the day and not giving gift or taking me to expensive restaurant and all. Ayyo, forget about celebrating, paavam fellow will not remember the day also. For him birthday and anniversary is coming up to his nose, what to talk about Valentine!
But there is one breaking news today! When I am reaching home after full vegetable shopping, the Mister is opening the front door and saying, Today is special day, I am having one surprise for you Kamala. And my head is going round like fan. He is joking or what? Or maybe he is not well and talking in his fever? But no… he is smiling like Shah Rukh Khan, our King of Romance. And I am thinking, Aiyya! Valentine Celebrations in my house? That too by the Mister? My face is becoming red like tomatoes in shopping bag and I am asking him, so where is the surprise? He is pointing to my room and my imagination is running in 5th gear. What is there? Diamond set? Kanjeevaram sari with double border? Bouquet? Maybe at least one rose from my own flower pot?
Quickly I am throwing all bags down and tomatoes and lemons are running around the room like the red and yellow balls on billiards table, and I am rushing inside the room.
But there is nothing there. Not even one balloon. Then what to tell you! The Mister is entering and saying, Surprise, surprise, at last after many days I am remembering to change the tube light in the room. He is putting on the switch and that is his surprise – till yesterday tube light is coming and going like party lights in disco club, now it is shining bright like full moon. Underneath it he is standing looking like he has only invented the light bulb.
So Kamalamma is also celebrating special day today – not Valentine’s Day but Thomas Alva Edison Day!
