Radhika's Diaries

Looking for a humor blog? You've come to the right place!

The call of work, we cannot ignore
it takes us far from our home land.
To different cities, states and countries
across strange new hills and desert sands.

We leave the family we grew up in,
our sisters, brothers, our parents;
And the other familiar faces too
our neighbours and our friends.

It feels strange in our new abode.
New faces, new names – it’s a blur.
We meet them here, we meet them there,
It doesn’t cause much of a stir.

Strangers all, in the initial days,
they become acquaintances and companions.
You exchange ‘hi’s and ‘hellos’s first,
gradually they turn into friends.

You message, you call, you visit each other,
you share a meal or two.
Somehow they become the go-to person
when you’re feeling a little blue.

Now, they are the ones who celebrate with you,
when happy times are near,
They are the ones who offer their shoulder
when you go through doubts and fear.

As the years roll by, slowly but surely
the dynamics change totally.
When and how, you never know
Those strangers have become family!

  1. As someone who’s staying far from home, I know many strangers who have become almost like family. Beautifully written ❤️

    So aware of this feeling…
I met my best friend in a far away land and I wrote this for her on her birthday – https://deepakadavakat.com/2017/01/01/friend-in-that-faraway-land/
    It brought back those memories..

Agreed…Yes, it is a slow process beginning with just hi and hello. But the strange thing about strangers becoming family is : we donot know why someone becomes the closest one and at the same time, others donot!

    1. Yes absolutely Dr Bharatchandra. Vibes, wavelength or a continuation of a relationship in the past life maybe?

I was watching Emily in Paris and I was thinking of exactly this. Our entire generation can relate to this. The thrill of a new place, then trying to fit in with numerous failures, then finally at last finding your tribe.. Friendships that don’t need a common language or culture… beautifully penned..

    1. That’s true. That’s how we develop the all important feeling of belonging. 😊
      Thank you Pratikshya.
