P – Parent-Teacher Meeting
“Are you listening to me?” The Aunt asked JayPrakash Uncle as they sat at the breakfast table. No reply. The Uncle was safely hidden behind the newspaper; or so he thought. Which husband has ever safely hidden from his wife!!!
The Aunt waved her hand in front of The Uncle’s face and repeated, “Did you hear what I said? There’s a Parent-Teacher meeting at the boys’ school today.”
The Uncle nodded. “Okay. What time are you’ll planning to go?”
The Aunt said, “I think you should come too this time. You never come!”
“You go.” said The Uncle. “I’ll just sit at home like a good boy!”
The Aunt sighed and went off to get ready.
The Uncle looked up from a whatsApp message he was reading, as the boys emerged from their room – in school uniform and with neatly combed hair.
“Who’s Preeta Ma’am?”
“Our new Drawing Teacher.” replied Raju. “Appa. You should see her …… Woah!!”
The Uncle’s ears perked up. “Why?” he asked.
“She’s a model Appa,” said Raju. “She’s a super model!”
The Aunt finally emerged from the room in full battle gear – sparkling silk sari, matching bangles and a string of jasmine flowers in her hair.
The Uncle gaped at her. “Are you sure you’re going for a school meeting?”
The Aunt snorted. “This is nothing!!! You should see some of the others.”
The Uncle shook his head and picked up the car keys.
“Where are you going?” asked The Aunt.
“To the meeting of course!”
“But you said…..”
“I know what I said. But I also know my responsibilities. And meeting the boys’ teachers is one of them!”
The Uncle parked the car in the school parking area and they all got out. The school compound was a sea of parents – most of the men in T-shirt and Jeans; and the women looking like there was a festival in town.
“Are we meeting all the teachers?” asked The Uncle.
“Just the main subjects….’ replied The Aunt.
“How about the Drawing Teacher?”
“Drawing Teacher? Why? Not necessary I think.”
15 minutes later (as they exit from the Science room.)
“I think we should meet the Drawing Teacher.” said The Uncle.
“Tsk. Why so much interest in Drawing suddenly?” asked The Aunt impatiently.
“We should give equal importance to all subjects.” said The Uncle pompously. “All round development and all!”
He added, “Look why don’t you all go on and meet the Math Teacher. In the meantime I’ll go ahead and meet the Drawing Teacher. That way we won’t waste any time. Go on … Go on….” he said gently pushing them forward.
“Where’s the Drawing room?” he asked a passing school volunteer.
“Straight down the corridor,’ the chap replied. “You can’t miss it. There’s a huge crowd waiting to get in!”
And he was right. What seemed to be half of the men’s population of the city seemed to be in line in front of the Art Room. The Uncle joined the line. The line slowly inched forward and just as it was his turn to enter the room, The Aunt appeared with the boys in tow.
“What are you doing here? she asked. “We’re done meeting all the teachers. Let’s go.”
“The Drawing Teacher……?”
“You’re acting as if the boys are some budding M F Hussein or something!!” stated The Aunt as she dragged the visibly reluctant Uncle out of the school doors.
5 minutes later. In the car.
“When is the next Parent-Teacher Meeting?” JP Uncle asked. “I think I’ll bring the boys myself. You can rest at home!”
