O – One for the Road
JayPrakash Uncle sat behind the steering wheel of his car with The Aunt regally seated next to him in the passenger seat. He reversed the car out of the parking slot and drove slowly up to the gates of the building complex.
“Go slowly here,” advised The Aunt. “There’s a road hump ahead.”
“I know there’s a road hump here. I go over it several times in a day.” said The Uncle.
“I’m not so sure.” said The Aunt doubtfully. “Remember how you went flying over it 2 months ago? I hit my head so badly!”
“Two months ago…!” said The Uncle. “Trust you to remember such things long after…..”
The Aunt interrupted. “Oy! Be careful. You almost ran over that dog………….”
A few minutes later.
“Tchah!” exclaimed The Aunt. “You’re driving so slowly. Do you plan on reaching wherever we’re going today or tomorrow? I think I can reach faster if I walk!!”
“How much faster do you want me to drive in this traffic??” asked The Uncle.
The Aunt ignored that. She said. “You know Mala’s husband. He drives so well! Vidya’s husband is also such an expert driver! He…… Woah! What are you doing? Drive slowly na! You almost hit that man!!”
The Uncle looked around and said. “Which man? I don’t see anybody in front.”
“That one over there!”
“That man? How can I possibly hit him? He’s up on the pavement!”
“Tsk! I meant you would have hit him if he had stepped off the pavement and walked in front of the car!!”
The Uncle sighed and shook his head. No point replying to that.
After a few minutes.
“Relax!” advised The Aunt. “Why are you driving so fast? Are the Police after us? Stop Stop!! You missed the turn……..”
The Uncle said irritably. “Don’t shout! I didn’t miss any turn. Didn’t you see the ‘No Entry’ sign there?”
The Aunt shook her head and said, ” Certainly not. I can’t stop to look at sign boards and all. I have to be alert when you’re driving!”
The Uncle rolled his eyes and said, “Will you stop giving me running commentary and expert advice when I’m driving?” he said sternly. “Just sit quietly and enjoy the ride. Do I interrupt and advice you when you’re cookng?”
The Aunt said, ” Don’t you?? Who keeps coming up and saying “Oh salt is less! Why is it so spicy? This dosa is undercooked! Don’t burn the rotis…….!”
She gave a loud sniff and said “You should also learn to sit quietly and enjoy my cooking!”
