Breaking news

“If you don’t read the Newspaper you’re uninformed. If you read the newspaper you’re mis-informed”

Mark Twain said that apparently. And boy – was he right!!!

Tell me – where, oh where do I go if I simply want to know the News?Β  😦

You can call me nostalgic or just an ol’ Timer. Call me what you will. But for the past week or so I’ve really been longing for the Good ol’ Days when we had just one TV News Channel (CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!!!!) and news was just that – N.E.W.S. – simply News, as in – a factual report on what’s happening in the North, East, West, and South of India and of the world! The whole family would sit around the television after dinner and tune in to the 9 o’clock news. And we would watch the elegant news-readers as they read the news out to us calmly and gracefully. Once it was over, they would go about their business and we went about ours!

While these days….. well, these days every time I watch the News, I emerge dazed and battered like I’ve been through a cyclone!!Β  My head throbs, my heart beats wildly and I’m almost on the verge of pulling out my hair. And it’s not only because the news is either sad, bad or plain mad! It’s more to do with the manner in which news is gathered and imparted to us.

Well, look here……I really don’t want 20 or 30 news channels (it could be more – I haven’t been counting) bombarding me 24 hours/365 days with sensational news missiles and information bombs –Β  all accompanied by noise, drama and histrionics – repeated every half-hour for a couple of days, until …… the next bomb (News bomb I mean) πŸ™‚

I prefer the News Channels to behave like News Channels; and not as rivals competing with one another and aiming for “Highest Readership” “Best News Channel”, “Highest TRP” and whatever else! And the viewer be damned (beg your pardon).

I do not want the TV news screen cluttered up with a dozen flickering and flashing images and messages and Headlines and Breaking news and more; all demanding my attention at the same time. Right now I feel like I’m in a Discotheque full of blinding neon lights; with the newsreader as the DJ; and the viewers dancing to the tune of the day. πŸ™‚

I would be grateful if someone could tell me what exactly constitutes as ‘Breaking News’. These days our News Channels seem to think every strayΒ  bit of news is breaking and it actually is breaking my patience!

And while we’re about it….. someone please clear my confusion as to how a Debate ought to be conducted – Prime Time or otherwise.
a) Should the Mediator give the participants a chance to talk or not??
b) Is it the job profile of the Mediator to also act as the prosecutor, the judge and the executioner? And the undertaker too maybe!

So there you are………

Now tell me, is it just me or are there others who feel the same …..????

The Nation would like to know, I’m sure!!

Haha. I totally agree about the clutter of info on the screens. There is no place for anything else. I suggest that instead of TV news, go for reading news on your phone, at your pace, at your time. It isuch more peaceful and accurate too. I do that. Stopped watching tv news
